Paris Sciences & Lettres (PSL) was established out of a desire to create larger university communities in France which are in-line with international higher education standards and which would benefit from more visibility on the world academic market. Founded and financed as part of the national loan scheme known as the ‘Grand Emprunt’, PSL climbed quickly to an estimated top 25 worldwide position in the Shanghai Ranking.
PSL is already number one amongst French universities, and post-Brexit, it will be number one in Europe. Recognized by its peers, PSL has signed 13 strategic institutional cooperation agreements with some of the world’s finest universities (the University of Cambridge, UCL, Columbia, NYU, Berkeley, EPFL, Australian National University, Technion, Tsinghua University, Peking University, Shanghai Jiao Tong, HKUST, and National Taiwan University).
Generator of 26 Nobel Prizes and all French Fields Medals, PSL offers a unique range of disciplines: a pole in the hard sciences amongst the best in the world (Collège de France, ENS, Observatoire de Paris, Institut Curie), renowned engineering schools (MINES ParisTech, ESPCI Paris, Chimie ParisTech), France’s principal pole in Humanities and Social Sciences (Ecole nationale des chartes, EHESS, EPHE, EFEO), an institution where education and research in organizational sciences are practiced at the highest level (Paris-Dauphine), but also something that no other French university possesses, 5 prestigious schools of arts: CNSAD, CNSMDP, ENSAD, ENSBA, La Fémis. Three research organizations - CNRS, INSERM, INRIA – are partners of PSL.
PSL is home to 4,700 faculty and researchers in 181 laboratories, representing one-third of Paris’ scientific forces. It can deliver complex strategic interdisciplinary projects, by capitalizing on its capacity to move fluidly between fundamental and applied research.
PSL has 20,000 students, of which 22% are international, and 70% are enrolled in masters or doctoral programs. It has designed radically new training programs in the French academic space. All the schools have transferred their degrees to PSL. Highly selective, PSL is attracting greater numbers of international students, with an increase of 40% in overseas applications for master’s programs since 2011.
The tech transfer policy of Paris Sciences & Lettres is entirely focused on the creation of start-ups. Their annual creation rate has tripled since 2011 to reach an average of 40. 100 patents are applied for each year. The number of industrial contracts has reached an average of €55 million per year. PSL counts 68 industry-sponsored chairs in areas such as health, digital technology, environment, technology, and management, for a total of 13% of such chairs in France.
